Biography

Galina Hartinger is an Austrian-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores portraiture, identity, memory, and the evolving relationship between human perception and artificial intelligence.

Born in Ukraine and educated in Saint Petersburg, she studied Philosophy and History of Religion at Saint Petersburg State University and later pursued Art History and academic drawing. Her interdisciplinary background continues to inform a practice that combines philosophical inquiry with visual experimentation.

Before focusing on contemporary art, Hartinger worked in theatrical makeup, creating character transformations for opera performers and stage productions. This experience established a lasting interest in the human face as a site where identity, performance, vulnerability, and cultural expectations intersect.

Portraiture became the central thread of her artistic practice.

In her watercolor series Face is the Key, Hartinger investigates emotional presence through the immediacy of gesture and the transparency of the medium. These works explore the subtle psychological traces that remain visible beneath social roles and constructed appearances.

More recently, her attention has shifted toward artificial intelligence and algorithmic image generation.

In the ongoing project Dreaming Beauties / Nature Morte, Hartinger examines how contemporary technologies participate in shaping concepts of beauty and identity. Generated through AI systems and realized as archival prints, translucent organza works, and acrylic installations, the series explores the tension between individuality and standardization, memory and simulation, presence and absence.

The project reflects on a cultural moment in which the portrait is no longer exclusively produced by human observation but increasingly emerges from datasets, probabilities, and machine learning systems.

Living and working in rural Austria, Hartinger develops a practice situated between traditional artistic craftsmanship and emerging digital technologies.

Her work has been presented internationally in exhibitions and projects in New York, Athens, Los Angeles, Frankfurt, Ljubljana, and online platforms dedicated to contemporary and digital art.

Through painting, portraiture, installation, and AI-generated imagery, she investigates what remains of human identity when images become autonomous participants in cultural life.
